At Buffer, remote work is more than just where we work — it’s how we work. With teammates all over the world, we embrace flexibility, autonomy, and async communication, trusting each teammate to manage their time and responsibilities in a way that aligns with both their personal productivity and the needs of their team.
Working Hours & Availability
We don’t have set working hours, and we encourage teammates to structure their day in a way that suits them best while being mindful of collaboration needs. Some key expectations:
- With teammates working all over the world, we embrace async work, allowing us to accommodate different time zones and schedules.
- That said, some real-time collaboration is needed, and we expect teammates to be available for essential meetings, project syncs, and 1:1s with managers.
- Transparency is key — keep your calendar updated with your working hours and time off so teammates know when to expect responses.
Meetings & Async vs. Sync Communication
We keep meetings intentional, prioritizing real-time discussions when they add value. Instead of frequent standing meetings, we embrace ad-hoc conversations to move work forward when needed.
- Meetings are for discussions that require deep collaboration, relationship-building, or decision-making.
- Written communication is our default: updates, feedback, and discussions often happen in Slack, Campsite, Linear, or Notion to ensure transparency and easy access across time zones.
Communication Expectations
Clear, open, and respectful communication is foundational to our remote culture. Here’s what we expect from all Bufferoos:
- Be proactive: Share updates, ask for help when needed, and keep stakeholders informed.
- Be mindful: Respect each other’s focus time by using async tools and avoiding unnecessary pings or urgent expectations.
- Be human: Remote work can sometimes feel transactional, so take the time to connect — whether it’s a quick check-in, a thoughtful comment, or a Donut call.
We strive to create an environment where you can do your best work while maintaining a healthy balance. If you ever need guidance on navigating remote work expectations, your manager and teammates are always here to support you.
