Gratitude was added as our 9th value after we had established the original 8 values. We realized that this was a fundamental part of our culture, and should be included as an official value. It’s been a cherished value and a huge part of how we approach work and life ever since.
What this looks like in practice:
- I regularly stop and am grateful for my circumstances.
- I openly celebrate the work that we all do to push the company forward and to help us move faster. As part of that, I recognize that every teammate does unseen and uncelebrated work to keep Buffer healthy.
- I approach customer conversations with humility and the knowledge that it’s a privilege to serve them.
- I honor my teammates for choosing to spend part of their life building Buffer.
- I have gratitude for the platforms, tools, and open source that laid the foundation for the possibility of Buffer.
At Buffer, we show Gratitude in many different ways, but some of the most visible ways are HeyTaco & our Slack Channel #culture-gratitude.
HeyTaco is a Slack app that we use to show gratitude, say thank you, and recognize everything from small wins to huge accomplishments.
Every teammate has 5 tacos to give out per day. Here’s how it works:
- To send a taco, simply @ mention a teammate in a channel, and add the 🌮 emoji. HeyTaco will send you a message that your taco was sent and let you know how many you have left to give out that day.
- You can also add a 🌮 react emoji to a message in Slack! The taco goes to the author if no one is tagged in the message. If someone is tagged, the taco goes to the teammate(s) who was tagged.
- You can give multiple tacos at once, or if you tag multiple teammates in your message, they all receive the number of tacos you add to the message. For example, you can give all of your tacos at once by gifting 1 taco each to up to 5 teammates by including one 🌮 emoji, and five @-mentions.
- If you have Taco Stickers to give away, try the
/stickers
command in a channel and tag the teammate(s)!
Tips and tricks:
- If you’re out of tacos for the day but want to recognize someone, you can schedule a message for a weekend. You have 5 tacos to give out on Saturdays and Sundays, too!
The Slack Channel #culture-gratitude is a dedicated area to show gratitude and thanks to the team! If you aren’t already a part of the channel, join us to start feeling and sharing some love! 🤗
