(Previously called “cultivate positivity” and “choose positivity and happiness.”)
Our value of optimism is rooted in the belief that we are in control of our destiny, and we have the power to create the future that we choose. (Of course, it may not be easy, and it may require some hard-learned lessons along the way!) Ultimately, it’s the choice to bet on us, on Buffer. We’ve always viewed this journey as an adventure we’re on together, and that all starts with optimism.
This was formerly known as “choose positivity.” We strived to be positive about the company, and to be very kind toward each other without complaining or criticizing. This positivity is one major piece of the bedrock of Buffer. That spirit is still a big part of our culture today. However, we moved away from the word “positive” because it could be limiting at times. For example, we found it hard to give feedback to each other when we made a commitment to be positive and to avoid criticism. But we want to have a culture where we are all getting better, and sometimes that requires having a tough conversation. We now feel that the more accurate term to capture this concept is “Optimism.”
Optimism helps us look to the future with positivity, while embracing hard conversations and decisions, done in service of Buffer’s health and future. It means that we believe in Buffer, and we believe in each other, and we go into the future with our eyes open.
